The children in Ohaaki and Poihipi teams have been participating in Passion Projects.
Mrs O’Sullivan’s Masterchef passion project supports children with learning about food hygiene, safety, food preparation and cooking.
WALT: learning the basic skills of using measuring equipment, food hygiene and the skills of mixing, melting and chopping.
Identify hazards in the kitchen - i.e. sharp knives, hot ovens/frying pans, tripping hazards.
Hygiene - always wash our hands thoroughly before handling food.
Follow a recipe using the ingredients listed and follow the steps in order. We discussed how a recipe is written. It uses very precise language for the reader.
Key competencies of Participating and Contributing, Relating to Others and Managing Self are central to success in the kitchen. The children are learning they each play a role in the process and they are working together to create our kai. It is important they take turns to do different steps in the process.
The students created their own recipe book. Each week a new recipe is added to their collection. Here are our recipes so far:
I like cracking the eggs into the bowl when we made pikelets. Remember to be careful with sharp knives. (Seraphina)
We always need to wash our hands before we cook because we don’t want to spread germs. I liked icing the gingerbread cookies with pink icing, marshmallows and licorice. (Alyssa)
I liked eating the pikelets. They were soft and spongy. I had to measure the flour. We need to have turns to help make our cooking. (Indigo)
