Here are things our families and students say are unique to the WPS experience:
Prepare to be transformed. A “stimulating place where the teachers care, where they expect a lot, and where they provide encouragement as well as the challenge to get young people to do things they had no idea they could do.” Our intensive curriculum challenges you to apply ethics and knowledge to real-life issues and fosters the development of innovative leaders and communicators who learn the skills to excel in a variety of educational and future professional fields.
One past parent described Wairakei Primary School as "a place where students question answers as much as they answer questions". Self-expression and communication are important pillars in a WPS education.
Our Wairakei Geothermal power station founders were people of principle. We try to maintain that principled approach. Everyone is on a first-name basis. We respect all families and ways of life. Acceptance, tolerance, and responsibility come first here. Our Core Values of Pride, Opportunity, Whanau, Excellence and Respect are derived and inspired from the founding Wairakei Geothermal power station principles.
As small rural community primary school's go, WPS ranks near the top of its class in diversity and sustainability. Not only are we geographically diverse, WPS students range in a variety of backgrounds. You will most likely find juniors and seniors as well as adult community support in your classes (and of course on Pet Day its likely to include a cat & rabbit or two), making your classroom experience especially dynamic. Outside the classroom, you’ll share our expansive grounds - and especially our one-of-a-kind gully and Aquaponics unit.
You do have to visit to appreciate the magic that is Wairakei Primary School.
