Whaea Sherryl

This is my fourth year of teaching here at Wairakei Primary School.

I am originally from Auckland and five years ago I saw the light and swapped my busy suburban life (and that traffic) for a more tranquil one.  I currently live on 15 acres with horses, dogs, cats and chickens and spend a great deal of my time fixing things that seem to constantly break – water troughs seem to be a specialty!

When I first came to Taupo in 2010 I taught at Taupo Intermediate for 2 years before joining the staff here at Wairakei Primary.  I have taught mainly year 5/6 and 7/8 students over my 15 years of teaching and I enjoy the independence that come with this age group.  Our focus this year is to encourage the students to become independent, problem solvers who show initiative and can work together in a collaborative way.  This will become even more important as they move through their school years into the workforce and into jobs that, for some, have not even been invented yet.

Everybody is a genius. But if you judge a fish by its ability to climb a tree it will live its whole life believing that it cannot succeed. All children have something to offer that is special and unique.
