Aratiatia Food Technology Elective

The Aratiatia team have had electives once or twice a week.  The food technology elective was fun and we made lots of delicious kai.

We started by making our own crackers. We could decide on the flavours and the shape that we wanted to cut them into. Most of us tried lots of different flavour combinations including smoked paprika, garlic, herb, cumin, poppy seed and sesame seed. They were delicious.

We designed and made smoothies and got to try lots of different fruit that many of us had never tasted before. Louisa plum, persimmon, tangelo, feijoa, carrot, apple, banana, mandarin and many more fruit and vegetables were added.

One of our favourite lessons was designer pikelets. We had to follow the recipe for a basic pikelet batter, but then we could add flavours to them. We tried them all and voted on our favourite. Some of the flavours were mint-chocolate chip, double chocolate, lemon poppyseed, carrot cake, and spicy apple.

We loved designing and making quesadillas. We tried making them in the oven and toasted sandwich maker to see which worked best. We decided the toasted sandwich maker was quicker and easier. We added ingredients like carrot, mexican beans, tomato, cheese, herbs, corn, paprika, baked beans, and onion.

Can we please make these again? asked Keanu.

I’m making these for my family for dinner! exclaimed Stella.

Other recipes that we made were microwave chocolate brownies in a bowl and butterscotch puddings in a cup. “The pudding was too sweet, but I made the brownies at home for my family,'' said Olivia.

We learned a lot of technology skills like following and adjusting recipes, trying different flavours, and creating our own recipes. Of course, we also learned basic cooking skills like cutting, rolling, grating, and using an oven, blender and microwave. We even learned how to hand wash dishes, which was a new skill for many of us!
