Room 10 The Amazing Kiwi

The students of Room 10 have been learning about the Living World in Science and within this topic Mathematics and the Visual arts have been integrated.  

Room 10’s inquiry has been on the amazing Kiwi bird.  The students have been learning about the special features of the Kiwi and how their adaptations have helped them to be more effective in finding food and living in their habitats. They have developed their understanding by recognising that the Kiwi have certain requirements so they can stay alive and how they are suited to their particular habitat.

During the learning process the students found out about how the Kiwi uses its beak to find food.  Room 10 students tested for vibration using water in a cup as the Kiwi uses its sense of smell and vibration to find worms in the soil.




They also tested the best beak to use to pick up worms and slugs by using tongs, a peg and chopsticks.




The chopsticks were far the best to use as a beak. They also found out that the  Kiwi beak needs to be quiet long so that it can get down far enough to reach the worms and other insects in the soil.

Room 10 students also made Kiwi eggs out of papier-mâché. They learnt about the circumference  of the egg and calculated how big it would be if it were six times the size of an ordinary chicken egg. The students blew up balloons representing the size and measured the circumference. They then pasted paper over the balloon and let it harden. 




Finally, the students used the Kiwi image for their calendar art. They added different geometric shapes, line shapes and bold colours to make it stand out on a yellow background. The Kiwi is such an amazing bird it has taught us all these things.  



Luke - I learnt that Kiwis are more important than I thought,  there are lots of people in New Zealand that care for them and that the Wairakei Golf Club incubates the Kiwi eggs.  I also found out that the male Kiwi looks after the eggs and sits on them for about 55 days.

Lilee - I enjoyed learning about the Kiwi because we got to make our own Kiwi egg and we had to work out how big the circumference was and try to make the egg the same size.  I also found out some interesting facts about the Kiwi. For our class's calendar art we used a kiwi shape and added different geometric shapes, designs and bold colours for it to stand out on a yellow background.

Tiarni and Tegan - It was fun and creative because we got to make our own species of Kiwi.  We also learnt about how Kiwi’s find worms in the soil by using their sense of smell and feeling the vibration of worms moving.  Did you know that Kiwi’s have their nostrils at the end of their beak?
