Steaming Into School is a unique Wairakei Primary School programme for children aged 4.5-5 years old. SIS provides an opportunity for children to meet and socialise at Wairakei Primary School with other children who are starting school about the same time they are. These children get a taste of what school will be like, including taking part in Literacy and Numeracy activities, visiting the school library, going to the school hall for action games and much more.
My name is Fiona Griffin and I am the SIS teacher and the New Entrant teacher at Wairakei Primary School. A major benefit of being in both these roles is that children attending SIS can get to know me before starting school.
Due to the distancing restrictions under Covid-19 we needed to be creative and innovative with how we would present SIS during Term 2, 2020. By creating an online SIS programme we could still allow parents and children an opportunity to get to know me and experience similar activities we would normally run in face to face SIS sessions.
The online SIS sessions contained videos of me saying our school karakia, reading stories and teaching phoneme lessons. There were also singing and dancing YouTube videos, print and do activities, and crafts parents could make with their child.

The online sessions were great, my child really enjoyed watching the videos. But they aren’t the same as coming into school. I think these are important.
I liked watching Mrs Griffin’s videos on my Mum’s phone.
