We are learning how to think like scientists by observing our experiments and investigations and asking questions such as “I wonder what will happen if…..?”. We are also learning that when conducting investigations we need to have differences (variables). Variable means that a condition can be changed. We also learned that you need to have at least one variable that is the same for each experiment. This will help us determine what changes to the experiment make the experiment work better or worse than other changes.
As part of our daily writing programme, the children are learning to write for an audience. How can we make our writing more interesting and how we can share our ideas with a wider audience.

Dancing with Ghosts was a fun experiment undertaken by Rooms 11 and 16, during their Science programme.
The ‘Dancing’ part of the activity is about Static Electricity. How it is generated and how it is used.
“Is it time to go swimming yet!?” again asked Joseph excitingly. Joseph is not the only student in Room 10 who eagerly waited for Miss Neal to ring her class bell to let them know it was time to pack up in anticipation for swimming. Room 10 as well as other classes at Wairakei Primary School have been fortunate enough to take part in the Contact Energy swimming and water safety programme held at the AC Baths. This programme enables thousands of children in the Taupo district to attend swim classes each year. It aims to encourage New Zealanders to recognise swimming and personal survival skills as the basis for all aquatic recreation.
The Te Huka Passion Discovery group made a video to share their learning about science reactions that cause explosions.
Inspired by the story Scarecrows from Space
Each year, students from Wairakei Primary School feature in a personalised national anthem video. This video is frequently played to begin our school assemblies and showcases the many learning opportunities that our students have taken part in over the last year. It shows the key competencies and our POWER in action. From the Tuwharetoa Festival and camps to hands-on science and sports, it celebrates the many achievements of our students.
