Pencil Creations

I sometimes think there is nothing so delightful as drawing - Vincent van Gogh

Room 9 has been looking at refining and enhancing our visual art skills.

Our main focus was how pencil sketching techniques could be used to create images. So it was fascinating when Mrs Isaacson showed us different ways artists use pencils. Some of the pictures looked just like photographs, and they were actually created with a pencil.

As a warm-up, everyone had some fun with pencils.

We had to:

  • try and write our names without taking our pencils off the paper.
  • draw a picture with our eyes closed.

Some of these pictures were funny.

Then we explored the different types of pencils. Thick sketching pencil, a regular writing pencil and a charcoal pencil.  By dividing  our page into three parts we tried various pencil techniques with each of the different pencils in each section.  Most students thought the sketching pencil would smudge the most. The charcoal pencil worked the best.

Smudging and shading have good effects on your picture - Sam

It was interesting to see how each pencil made a different effect - Emma

When we had fisnihed experimenting with using the range of pencils it was time to start the pattern page. Mrs Isaacson showed us a sheet with lines on it. We had to create patterns and designs of our own in each box.  Sometimes  combining different lines in the same box to create a new effect.

We learned to design different patterns with different types of pencils.  I liked making my patterns into a flower - Bella

I learned that crisscrossing pencil lines is called hatching - Zoe

For the end product everyone created a picture using the different line features .It was interesting when sharing the images the different techniques that were used could be seen.  It took was a few well-placed and interesting lines to create a piece of art.
