Walking the Catwalk

Ask the students of Room 3 about the properties of different fabrics and they’ll be able to give you examples of waterproof, warm, stretchy, natural and unconventional fabrics. Go one step further and ask them to design an outfit to meet these specific purposes and you’ll be amazed with the results.

Zooming into how fabrics and clothing were made, using microscopes and conducting scientific investigations, students were equipped with the knowledge needed to design and construct a three piece outfit to fit a specific brief. They discovered that stretchy fabrics with a lycra content were best for a more active lifestyle and vinyl would keep people mostly dry.

I learned how to work with others and use teamwork. I also learned how to make long pants and I learned how to make a long sleeve t-shirt out of a tarpaulin.

When we started wearable arts I was super excited. The first part we did was our design book. In the book we had to write our category theme then we had to draw our first idea of the costume and the tools. When we started our costume we had to make a lot of patterns to make it work. Then we started the costume. It took us about a week to make the pieces.

The real challenge came during the construction phase of the project by learning how to use pins, needles, cotton and sewing machines correctly. Changes had to be made so that pieces fit properly and would not fall apart.

I learnt how to do sewing and putting fabric together and learnt how to use the sewing machine. I know now that I can do everything.

I enjoyed wearable arts because we learnt how to sew clothes. Clothes like tops, skirts, and shorts. I  had some experience and I learnt more about patterns and we made it work when it didn’t quite go right.

What I liked about wearable arts is the sewing, cutting, and making the costume. It was a long process and it was worth it to see the finished costume. It was great. I had a lot of fun. Hopefully I can do it again.

Wearable arts was a good challenge given to our team in the time we had been given. The trickiest part for me was outlining the t-shirt pattern and adding the plants to the final piece. In my opinion, ours was a good choice of theme (natural).

The learning culminated at a Celebration of Learning event where Room 3 students showcased their learning alongside their fellow Te Mihi peers.

This performance, of walking down the catwalk was for many students,  the highlight of the learning process.

When we started wearable arts I had a good feeling about it. I was really excited. I learnt how to sew and make skirts and shirts. When I was backstage I was nervous but when I got on stage I crushed it and I walked off feeling so excited about the next show.

The show was very exciting and I was very nervous. When you get on stage it feels so good. Harrison made a great mask. When he described it I didn't think it would be as great as it was.
