Celebrating Sporting Success: History Makers

Wairakei Primary School has risen to success in sports, particularly over the last few years at interschool events.

School teams won the trophy for athletics from 2021-2023, cross country from 2023-2024, and swimming in 2024. As far as sporting success goes across all interschool events, the 2023-2024 season has been the school’s most successful. It is the first time in the history of the school that it has held all 3 trophies at the same time.

Below are some photos of Wairakei students enjoying success at the 2024 inter school athletics. Unfortunately, the team was unable to hold on to the athletics trophy this year, but it gives students something to aim for next year.

Wairakei Primary School’s recent success has been a journey that all competitors should take pride in. I’d like to congratulate all the students that were part of these championship teams. You all took the opportunity to show excellence in your areas of strength to achieve success. Respect and sportsmanship were always on display too, with many Wairakei students supporting each other and people they knew from other schools.

Although success was achieved through our representative teams from school, all students at Wairakei Primary School need to be acknowledged for participating in these school events. It helps create a feeling of whanau and unity, where everyone is pushing each other to run or swim faster, and jump and throw further.  Teachers and staff also did a fantastic job of training students, organising events, and thinking of creative ways to keep students active, like Jumping June.

2024 Morehu

Paul Morehu

I am from Christchurch but moved to Taupō at the end of 2018. I am passionate about travelling with my most memorable trip being to Egypt. I also love keeping fit through sport, the gym and just getting out and exploring the outdoors.

I have been a qualified teacher working in New Zealand since 2013. Prior to that, I spent 8 years in Hong Kong working with Chinese children in primary schools.

I decided to pursue a career in teaching because I loved the idea of making a difference in the world by helping children learn and develop as people. It is rewarding to see the progress children make and to be a part of their learning journeys.
