The Creation Station is an area in Room 12 where students make a variety of creations using paper, cardboard, crayons and felts. I noticed that many of the students' creations used a limited amount of colours despite lots of colours being available. This got me thinking about how I could introduce some learning around the colour palette and then incorporate this learning into an artwork.
I decided to have a focus on Art and the use of warm and cool colours. Primary colours which are red, blue and yellow were discussed. The students helped me put newspaper on the floor and carried the red, blue and yellow paints. Conrad mixed the blue and yellow paints to create green. Oliver mixed the red and yellow paints to create orange and Vera mixed the red and blue paints to make purple. Now it was the students' turn to make their own colour wheels using crayons.
I talked about where warm and cool colours sit on the colour wheel. The students could relate to these colours from the colour wheels that they had made. As a class we discussed how these warm and cool colours can make us feel. The sun was a good example of a warm colour that makes us happy. Sometimes the blue colour of water can make us feel calm.
By observing Room 12 during their creation station time, I was able to extend their learning of primary and secondary colours and develop their understanding of warm and cool colours. It will be interesting to see if they now use a greater variety of colours when making their own creations.
