We discovered that by slowing breathing and focusing on balance, we could distract ourselves from stress and frustration, helping to stay grounded.

This showed us how in other cultures, there are different ways that people can work on their hauora (wellbeing).

When I did yoga, I felt more calm and happy. It helped me be peaceful. I decided to do yoga for my end of term project. I did a lot of yoga moves and showed these on stage. I also made a poster to teach other people to learn them.

I learned that yoga is from India. They do it to calm themselves down. Yoga is calming and also relaxing. We learned that yoga has heaps of moves to it.

The class practised a range of poses such as the Tree, the Butterfly, the Bowl, and the Flamingo. Each pose helped tune  our bodies and minds, allowing everyone to experience how physical movement can positively impact emotional well-being.

This was an inclusive wellbeing activity as no matter what, students could participate at a range of levels they were comfortable with and capable of.

To present our learning students created posters, using their own photos of their yoga poses, to teach others and pass on their knowledge of yoga and how this can have an effect on wellbeing and physical health.

Teagan Hill

Having initially begun my career in education as a teacher aide in 2016, I have thoroughly enjoyed working alongside students to build their confidence and develop pride in their identity. I’m passionate about te reo Māori and kapa haka, as I firmly believe this is an important part of students finding their identity and sense of belonging as a student in Aotearoa.

With a particular focus on building students’ mana, I have developed a strength for building connections and relationships with my students. In my daily practice, I seek to achieve this by encouraging students to step out of their comfort zone, and show opportunity by giving everything a go.

Outside of the classroom, you can find me getting lost in my kindle or spending time with friends and whānau at the lake.
