Cross Country 2024

On cross country day, grey clouds threatened overhead -  this didn’t dampen the spirits of the Wairakei runners and supporters.

Some students had goals of making the interschool cross country team; some were trying to better their 2023 placing; some were just enjoying running with their friends; and others just wanted to complete the course. Everyone’s positive attitudes towards running were contagious. All students showed determination and commitment as they ran and walked their way around the course. It was wonderful to see so many parents and supporters cheering the runners on. High fives welcomed runners into the finish chute, giving them the energy they needed to finish strong with big smiles on their faces.

For many of the young Poihipi students, this was their first time doing cross country on the farm. This was the furthest many of them had ever run in their lives at one time. Their efforts could be seen on the finish line with heavy breathing, big smiles, and a few tears. You should all be very proud of your efforts.

Other more seasoned Te Mihi students ran great races. There were some close photo finishes, and bodies sprawled on the ground with the exertion shown.

Wairakei Primary School would like to thank all the people that made the day such a success: the students, school staff, race marshals, place getters, and all the people that turned up to support the students. You all helped create a wonderfully positive atmosphere that helped spur on the runners. A special thank you needs to go out to Bevan Thompson, who once again created a spectacular course. Finally, well done to all the students that qualified for the interschool cross country team. The school wishes you well as you seek to retain the interschool trophy from 2023.

2024 Morehu

Paul Morehu

I am from Christchurch but moved to Taupō at the end of 2018. I am passionate about travelling with my most memorable trip being to Egypt. I also love keeping fit through sport, the gym and just getting out and exploring the outdoors.

I have been a qualified teacher working in New Zealand since 2013. Prior to that, I spent 8 years in Hong Kong working with Chinese children in primary schools.

I decided to pursue a career in teaching because I loved the idea of making a difference in the world by helping children learn and develop as people. It is rewarding to see the progress children make and to be a part of their learning journeys.
