Students and their whānau had the opportunity to research the Matariki stars and create a project explaining the stars over the term break. An assembly was held to acknowledge the strengthening relationship between Ōruanui Marae and Wairakei Primary. Students who entered the Matariki Competition were given a certificate and the first place winner was awarded a taonga that was gifted by Ōruanui Marae.
The assembly was hosted by our eight Whanaungatanga Manukura, who through their commitment to Kapa Haka, Powhiri and Tikanga Māori have been identified as leaders. They worked hard to learn to pronounce the te reo Māori phrases in the script correctly and did so with confidence.
It was also a perfect time for our Kapa Haka groups to practise performing in front of an audience. The Years 2-3 group performed Purerehua with support from the Years 4-5 group who performed Kāhuri Taku Reo.
