Pirorirori, 2025 Term One
Kia ora Whānau
The ‘I belong’ focus is on understanding the specialness of being a New Zealander and living in Taupō, with emphasis on local history and culture, exploring significant places in the local area. Learning about their importance, while reflecting on New Zealand’s history from a global perspective.
Students will learn about significant locations around Taupō and the North Island, including the history of local iwi, important landmarks, and the significance of the Te Tiriti o Waitangi (Treaty of Waitangi), gaining an understanding of where the Whare Tiaki streams are located and why the team name is meaningful.
Students will participate in outdoor experiences that include making shelters, learning basic first aid, and learning some outdoor survival skills. Whanau are invited to celebrate and see these skills at the end of the term.
The students will also have the opportunity to learn how to read maps and better understand their local environment. Pirorirori and Raparapa will collaborate throughout the year, holding joint assemblies and participating in shared events.
Team Name: Pirorirori
Deepening the connection to the land and the rich history of the local region the teaching teams are named after significant geothermal valleys. Pirorirori, also known as the Blue Lake, is a special geothermal spring near the school. "Pirorirori" means "new skin" because the water is believed to have healing powers. It's a very important place for the local iwi.
