As part of a camping inquiry the students have been learning songs that would be perfect to sing around the campfire. There is more to singing than just the fun. These catchy tunes are packed with learning opportunities that help students develop.
Wyatt and Cameron loved learning the lyrics to Fish and Chips and picked them up really quickly. However they sometimes struggled with the timing of when to do a big thumbs up for the chorus. This resulted in some very staggered actions throughout the class and a few frowns from them both. This is where repetition is key. By playing the song every day, by the end of the week not only were the thumbs up on time, the volume and enthusiasm were also more exuberant.
Malachy and Rocco showed just how much effort it takes to master a song like "Fish and Chips." Learning new songs can be challenging, and not getting it right the first time can be frustrating. Yet, Malachy’s determination to keep trying until he got the words just right shows his growth in emotional regulation and self-confidence. For Malachy, memorizing the lyrics wasn’t just about getting the words right—it was a test of his perseverance and emotional resilience. Each time he tried and succeeded, he built self-confidence and emotional regulation. Malachy’s persistence paid off, and the feeling of accomplishment was clear when he proudly sang the song from start to finish.
It makes me feel good when I try new things and learn that I can do it
When it was time to wind down after a busy day Mason, Milly and Kerah - Lee enjoy singing another song called “Cheeky Little Fantail.” The gentle, relaxing tone of the song provides a perfect way to transition from active learning to a more peaceful state. This choice of song shows an understanding of how music can influence mood regulation and emotional well-being and it proved to be a very popular way to end our busy day.
Cheeky Little Fantail is my favourite song
Hearing the children hum and sing these songs throughout the day fills the classroom with a beautiful sound and it's really neat hearing the way they associate these songs with learning and enjoyment. The joy, enthusiasm, and emotional growth that come from singing are valuable building blocks for their development, and it’s heartwarming to see how these songs continue to shape and inspire them.
Singing the camping songs makes me feel happy
