Week 7 Term 2, 2026
Reporting to Whānau
At today’s teacher only day the staff have been focusing on Mathematics. This is part of the roll out of the Maths No Problem programme we are offering at school and provides the teachers a chance to delve deeply into their own learning on how to get the best out of the students.
Maths No Problem includes two workbooks that cover the year, a teacher manual, and additional online activities and modules for teachers to complete and understand.
They have also been moderating learning that has occurred since the start of the year in classes so that we can collect data on the progress of the students. To complete the moderation process all teachers provide evidence of the learning from a range of students and then sit with teachers of the same level and look at the quality of the work and the progress made.
They make collective decisions using the new descriptors of learning for every student based on these moderations and their own teacher judgement.
The new descriptors are:
Emerging: The student is just beginning to learn the knowledge and skills expected for their year level, and relies heavily on teacher guidance.
Developing: The student understands the basics and can complete simple tasks, but still requires frequent support and prompting.
Consolidating: The student is grasping the concepts and can complete tasks independently some of the time, but may still make mistakes.
Proficient: (Target level) The student consistently demonstrates the knowledge and skills required for their year level independently, and is ready to apply them.
Exceeding: The student consistently demonstrates an advanced understanding and can transfer their knowledge to new, more complex situations.
While not currently mandatory for reporting to parents, the school is required to use these descriptors to collect data across the school.
Staffing update
Angel Chauval is leaving the school as she has taken a position as a Resource Teacher of Learning and Behaviour. She takes up this position at the beginning of Term Three. Miss White who has joined us from Auckland will be taking Room 3 for the rest of the year.
Mrs Beck will be starting the next new entrant class when it starts. She joins us from Rotorua. Both have moved to Taupo to become part of the school community.
Junior Playground
The junior playground will be fenced off on Friday, June 12, as work starts on Monday, June 15. The playground will be out of bounds until the last week of school when I will reopen the area. There will be large safety fences around the playground that we will all need to navigate until the playground is completed.
Students in Rooms 7 and 9 will need to put their bags and lunch boxes in their classrooms as the bag areas will be out of bounds.
Senior Playground
Two additional grants awarded to the school have put us within $30,000 of the amount needed to complete the senior playground. The school is still applying for grants to raise the funds; however, we need local sponsors to assist us.
Attendance
There has been an increase in attendance across the school for the start of term two. We are currently tracking at 69% of students having regular attendance. This is a jump from the same time period in 2025, when the school was at 56% of students with regular attendance.
We still have work to do. If your child is on a holiday or recovering from an illness where they just need time at home, they are able to work from home. You can contact the office and they will send you the pack. I do ask that you sign for the pack or state in the email that your child is doing work at home.
I have asked the attendance officers from Tauhara College to come and help me with the chronic absences. They will be contacting families. The work from home pack may help these families.
Remember to send your $5 for the tree for the gully and get a sausage on Thursday, June 4, 2026.
See you at the working bee on Saturday, June 6, 2026 after Saturday morning sport to help plant these trees.
