I was proud to compete in interschool cross country and represent Wairakei Primary School. It was my first time making it to interschools. My goal was to finish in the top 20 of the Year 5 boys. I enjoyed myself and learnt that trying my best was all I needed to do on the day.
From the moment students laced up their shoes, there was a buzz of excitement. Runners arrived determined to chase personal bests, others simply wanted to finish the race. No matter the pace, every step taken on that course was a step towards growth.
My goal was to go and place in the top 10 for Year 6 boys. I ran my own race, not worrying about who was in front of me, as I knew I had 2km to run. I made sure to keep the leaders in eyesight at all times, ready to plan my next move. On the last corner, I put my foot down and sprinted around the outside of the boy that was leading to finish in first place. I arrived back at school with a gold medal around my neck and a new track record to my name.
As the day wrapped up, the tired legs and proud smiles told the full story, as Wairakei Primary was named the 2025 Interschool Cross Country Champions for the third consecutive year.
The effort and dedication shown by students, from early morning farm runs to hill training, truly paid off. A special thank you to Bevan for running training sessions at Spa Park.
I trained a lot more this year, getting up early to go running. I trained at Spa Park as much as I could after school. I was aiming to finish in the top 3, on the day I placed in the top 10. I am really happy with my efforts as I ran my own race and I crossed the finish line this year, which I didn’t do in 2024.
Wairakei Primary winning the interschool championship for Taupō for the third year in a row is an incredible success for the students. Showing pride by wearing the Wairakei Primary School colours, taking opportunities to challenge themselves, supporting one another and pushing for excellence with every stride. Ka mau te wehi, Wairakei – champions in every sense.
