Virtual Learning at Wairakei

I chose to learn Japanese since I have always wanted to go to Japan.  It can be really fun and also hard at the same time. I would definitely recommend it to other people. - Frankie

VLN is a great learning experience where you can learn about a subject of your choice every week. Some Year 6 students have had the opportunity to do VLN this year. VLN stands for Virtual Learning Network, because you do it online. Each time you go, you have to open your Chromebook and go into Zoom. Your teacher is in another town, and so are the other students in the class. Then everyone meets for the lesson.

Here are some interviews with students who take part in VLN. There are two students who learn Japanese on Wednesdays at 2:15p.m.

Frankie: What have you learned from this experience?

Laura: I have learned many things, such as how to introduce myself in Japanese. Konnichi wa. Hajimemashite. Watashi wa Rora desu.

F: What is the most interesting thing you have learned?

L: That there are many ancient and beautiful castles in Japan that have been around since the 1600s.

F: Do you want to do this again next year, and why?

L: Yes, because I have made so many friends from this experience. There are kids from all over New Zealand in my Zoom class. And I can make more friends if I go overseas.

There are three people who learn the subject of physics every Monday. This is Lennon’s interview.

Frankie: What have you learned from this experience?

Lennon: I have learnt the difference between velocity and speed.

F: What is the most interesting thing you have learned?

L: All about friction. It is a force that stops the motion between two things.

F: Do you want to do this again next year, and why?

L: Yes, because I have learned a lot about science. Last semester, I studied biology and learned about cells and genetics.

Max S. also does physics, and he was interviewed next.

Laura: What have you learned from this experience?

Max: I have learned that boats have water in the hull.

L: What is the most interesting thing you have learned?

M: I learned about the density of liquids. Denser liquids sink and less dense liquids float. For example, honey is denser than water, so it sinks.

L: Do you want to do this again next year and why?

M: Maybe, because I have learned a lot. It does take time out of my day because I do a thirty-minute lesson and then I have some homework to do during the week.

Next year, Year 6s should take the opportunity to learn a language or about art or science. It means they can learn about something they are interested in, make some new friends and develop some new skills. They will also learn how to manage their time. Students have to remember their lesson and then do homework. It’s important to be brave and try to speak in front of people you don't really know. Sometimes it’s easy to forget that you are on mute and the teacher has to tell you. Sometimes it’s hard to know what to say but you just have to try.

Spanish is a very popular language since there are five students who do it. This is what Spencer had to say.

Laura: What have you learned from this experience?

Spencer: I have learned emotions and greetings.

L: What is the most interesting thing you have learned?

S: Likes and dislikes. Me gusta el futbol.

L: Do you want to do this again next year, and why?

S: Yes, because it is fun and I can talk about things I like.

Next is Leela.

Laura: What have you learned from this experience?

Leela: How to say ‘hi’ in Spanish. Hola!

L1: What is the most interesting thing you have learned?

L2: ‘Me llamo esta Leela’, which means ‘my name is Leela’.

L1: Do you want to do this again next year and why?

L2: Yes, because I learn heaps in every lesson. I feel like I can say things in Spanish and maybe I can go somewhere and speak Spanish one day.
