Your first years of teaching shouldn't be something you survive on your own.
At Wairakei Primary School a beginning teacher gets more than a mentor's name on a form. Expect a full induction programme, colleagues two doors down who will happily hand over their planning, and leaders who would rather you asked the question than pretended you had the answer.
This is a school where having a go counts. Take an end of the skipping rope. Have a crack at kicking a soccer ball back to a Year 5 who kicks it better than you. Turn up to the events. Tamariki notice teachers who join in, and so do their whānau.
You will be pushed in the best way: try new approaches, learn to read your assessment information properly, and build a classroom where expectations are clear and children want to be. Feedback is regular and straight, because the goal is to make you good, not comfortable.

What you will bring
- A Tūturu, Pūmau or Tōmua practising certificate — beginning teachers are genuinely welcome.
- Curiosity, initiative and the belief that every child can make progress.
- Confidence with technology, and an interest in making things work better.
- A willingness to engage with whānau about their children, and to be part of school life beyond your classroom.
- Also valued: BSLA structured literacy, Oxford Maths or Maths No Problem, and te reo Māori capability.
The details
- Year 4–6, reporting to the Team Leader.
- Salary under the Primary Teachers' Collective Agreement 2026–2028, step set by qualifications and experience.
- Appointment is subject to a current practising certificate and a satisfactory safety check, including a New Zealand Police vet, under the Children's Act 2014.
- School visits are welcome on school days — book a time through the school office.
