We began our journey by learning about Chi, which is the life force or energy that flows through all living things in Chinese culture. Did you know that it is integral to medicine, daily life, and martial arts in China? Our tamariki were captivated by the idea that Chi gives us life and keeps us connected to the world around us.

Tai Chi is about moving slow and breathing deep. It makes me feel peaceful

Tai Chi teaches me to focus on my breath and my movements, like a dance.

As we explored the meaning of Chi, we also connected it to the Māori concept of mauri, which similarly represents the life force within us. Through mindfulness exercises, we learned how to listen to our life force. We practised deep, slow breathing, which helped us connect with our Chi and provided health benefits. We noticed how calming and centering it was to focus on their breath, and they enjoyed the peacefulness it brought to our classroom.

I learned that Tai Chi helps me feel calm and strong, Chi is similar to the Maori word mauri about the spirit or force inside us. Practising to harness it will allow it to shine bright.

The highlight of our Tai Chi journey was learning various Tai Chi movements. And teaching these to our Buddy class in Room 14. Each movement has unique benefits for the body, promoting balance, flexibility, and overall well-being. We practised with enthusiasm, and it was wonderful to see each other moving gracefully and mindfully. Even creating an instructional video to teach others a variety of Tai Chi movements.

Doing Tai Chi makes me feel like a fighter, but in a peaceful way.

Through our Tai Chi practice, we discovered numerous health benefits. The deep, controlled breathing associated with Tai Chi helps to slow down our breathing, which can reduce stress and improve mental clarity. The gentle, flowing movements are excellent for enhancing physical health, including improving balance and flexibility.

This journey into Tai Chi has not only taught us about an ancient practice but also helped us understand the universal concept of life force, whether it's Chi or mauri. It's been a beautiful blend of cultural learning and personal growth for us all.

Teaching Tai Chi to our buddy class and whānau was tricky because we had to show them each move slowly. It was hard to explain without using words, but helping them feel each step was important, like sharing our mauri with them.

I feel centered and balanced when I practice Tai Chi, like I'm standing strong.
